Strain field characterization of impact damage in GFRP laminates using DIC measurement
Full-field strain around impact damage in GFRP(Glass-fiber Reinforced Plastics) laminates under tensile load has been characterized by DIC(Digital Image Correlation) technique. In this study, tensile specimens were prepared from two different GFRP laminates with the respective different fiber direction, UD and TRI (uni-directional and three-directional). Two different impact damages were introduced into the respective specimens by a drop weight testing system with pyramidal and hemispherical impactor tip. In order to investigate a severity of the damage size, the respective damages were made with three different impact energy levels of 4J, 6J and 8J. The strain fields around the respective damages were determined from the DIC images acquired with 3D DIC technique. So, in this study, dependency of the strain fields on the laminate direction, impact shapes and severity of the damage could be examined.
