Bio-mimetic Flow Control
The biomimetic engineering is a scientific discipline of implementing nature-inspired ideas to engineering systems for their performance enhancement (Choi et al., Phys. Fluids 2012). Based on the premise that the features of living organisms are potentially optimal solutions for their survival and reproduction, the flow-control society has shown much interest in applying plant- and animal-based solutions to the development of novel concepts or techniques for successful flow control. In this talk, we set up flow control strategies based on the biomimetic approach, paying a special attention to the surface morphological features of living creatures. We first perform a few experiments to confirm the conjectures on the roles of these features of living creatures such as the tubercles on the humpback whale’s flipper, alula of the magpie’s wing, grooves on the sea scallop, longitudinal dorsal ridges of the leatherback turtle, and a secondary feather of a landing bird. Then, we apply the concepts developed during this course to various flow systems including fans, airfoils and automobiles. Some successful results are presented and future research directions will be discussed.
