Aquaporin biomimetic membrane for water desalination
Modern desalination membranes are fabricated using dense polymeric films, which consists of micro to nanoscale pores and requires a certain pressure to purify water. This irregular pore structure decreases water flux and hence increases energy consumption. To overcome low water flux and high energy consumption, aquaporin containing membranes were fabricated. These aquaporin proteins has high water selectivity and permeability in biological systems. But manufactural difficulties and fragility of these biomimetic membranes precludes their industrial applications. This study suggested an electrokinetic approach to fabricate an aquaporin biomimetic membrane, which selectively coats the substrate pores for high water flux and a layer by layer protective coating of polydopamine (PDA) for enhanced stability. The membrane performance was tested under FO conditions and as compared to control its shows two fold water flux and 94.1% salt rejection.
