Artificial intelligence in medicine: Clinical experience of IBM’s Watson for Oncology
Due to technical advances, cancer research is producing information at an incredibly rapid pace challenging even the most tech-competent physicians to use these data to significantly improve actual patient care. An example is the current information about the cancer’s genome: millions of molecular alterations that might impact the growth of cancer cells have been discovered and might also influence the response to treatment. It has been estimated that the medical literature increases by doubling the amount of information every 3 years. So, a physician should read 29 hours per working day to stay updated about new cancer researches. The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has begun to affect various fields. Medicine is one of the representative fields, and Watson for Oncology were trained by the collaboration between the IBM researchers and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. WFO can generate a ranked list of therapeutic options based on the new clinical trials, scientific articles, and any national and international guidelines. WFO achieved a high degree of concordance with tumor board recommendations. In addition to oncology, such technologies also have applications in radiology, pathology, and dermatology. We will discuss major issues related to WFO such as whether AI would replace human physicians, who would be responsible for the results, and how we regulate and validate the medical artificial intelligence.
