Sorption reinforced bio-catalytic system for degradation and removal of organophosphate pesticide
Protection from toxic chemical nerve agents is crucial for people suffering from its lethal intoxications. There is a need to detect and decontaminate the lethal chemical gases to ensure safety. Hence, a system of sensing and decontaminating material is required capable of high sensitivity to rapidly neutralize the toxic chemicals. Herein, we utilized organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH) enzyme as a catalytic material held in with the supporting matrix of poly-β-cyclodextrin (PCD) against organophosphate. PCD has enhanced sorption capacity as compared to cyclodextrin monomer, which provides a physical support for the enzyme to form OPH bearing PCD (OPH-PCD). OPH-PCD not only served as an absorbent material for the pesticide methyl paraoxon (MPO), but also hydrolyzed it to para-nitrophenol (pNP). Thus a stable bio-catalytic system was demonstrated as a platform for adsorption and degradation of MPO providing a promising strategy for the neutralization of chemical nerve agents.
