Gravity-capillary Nonlinear Solitary Waves

Gravity–capillary solitary waves are generated by a moving “air-blowing” forcing and a moving “air-suction” forcing. The air forcing moves horizontally over the surface of deep water with speeds close to the minimum linear phase speed cmin=23cm/s. Four different states are observed according to forcing speed. At relatively low speeds below cmin, small-amplitude linear circular depressions are observed just below the moving forcing (air-blowing) or ahead of the moving forcing (air-suction). As the forcing speed increases close to cmin, however, nonlinear 3-D gravity–capillary solitary waves are observed behind the moving forcing (air-blowing) or ahead of the moving forcing (air-suction). When the forcing speed is very close to cmin, oblique shedding phenomena of 3-D gravity–capillary solitary waves are observed behind the moving forcing (air-blowing) or ahead of the moving forcing (air-suction). Finally, when the forcing speed exceeds cmin, “V”-shaped wave patterns are observed from behind the moving forcing (air-blowing) or from ahead of the moving forcing (air-suction).
