On Offshore Wind Plants and Fatigue Load Mitigation

A hybrid wind plant system fixed on an offshore floating platform consisting of four utility-scale 3-MW turbines was investigated using large-eddy simulation. In particular, the close spacing of 1.5 rotor diameter between the adjacent turbines was studied in detail to assess the power performance and the associated damage equivalent load. A fully waked condition for the downstream turbine blades yielded reduced damage equivalent load while substantial increase was observed for a skewed wind direction which is caused by partial exposure to the freestream atmospheric flow on the downstream turbines and this can potentially lead to premature blade failures.
