습윤 반응성 다층 물질의 나선형 거동
Pelargonium seeds, which have helix configuration, are a common example of self-burrowing creatures in the botanical world. The mechanism of the burrowing is behind the multilayer of the hygroscopic swelling materials, which change the shape of the seeds (coiling or uncoiling). Despite intensive study of helical motion of the bilayer materials, the tri-layer model has not been treated. Here, we develop a novel theoretical modeling, which was experimentally verified, to predict the features of the helix of the seed. In addition, we fabricate the hygroscopically responsive sheets by using electrospinning to develop artificial awn mimicking Pelargonium. We anticipate our work will shed light on the physics of helical motion of the laminated plates and become an essential design parameter of tunable helical motion actuator.
