Sliding friction of ordered micro line patterned surfaces on ice
Sliding friction on ice is physically complex subject due to existence of the water layer between the ice surface and the other contacting body. It was revealed by Bowden and Hughes that this water layer is generated by frictional heat. Many researchers were conducted experiments with various kinds of plates to control the friction coefficient on ice. However, the plate with ordered micro line patterns have not been investigated. In this paper, we conducted the experiments with ordered micro line patterned surfaces. To figure out the effect of ordered micro line patterns, three experimental conditions were changed; gap between the micro-line patterns, sliding direction of the surface and temperature of the ice. These changes produced various value of friction coefficient. And to reveal the mechanism occurred between ice substrate and ordered micro-line pattern, we adopted Oksanen and Keinonen's prediction model for ice friction. From this model, we suggest calculating method for contacts number and contact area. And the calculating results show the critical role of the micro line patterns.
