Measurement of hydrogen storage capacity and catalytic performance of 9-ethylcarbazole under 0.8 MPa system pressure

Ahsan Ali, 이희준(국민대학교)
9-ethylcarbazole has been considered to be one of potential liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Hydrogenation experiment was conducted by a stirring type chemical reactor to study hydrogen storage capacity of 9-ethylcarbazole at 0.8 MPa system pressure and to investigate the catalytic performance of commercially available metal catalysts, Raney-Ni, Ru/Al2O3 and Ru black in this study. The volume of the chemical reactor vessel is 300 ml. Ten grams of 9-ethylcarbazole and one gram of a catalyst were added to the reactor. The experiment was conducted at 180 C temperature and 800 rpm stirring speed. Among the selected catalysts, 5 wt.% Ru/Al2O3 showed the higher catalytic activity, whereas Ru black was the passive. Since Raney-Ni is cheap and similar catalytic performance, Raney-Ni was selected to be a catalyst for hydrogenation experiment. As a result of hydrogenation experiment at 160 C optimal temperature for a period of 28.5 hours, it turns out that the hydrogen storage capacity is 1 wt.%, which is maximum storage capability for 10 grams in 300 ml reactor vessel. After repeated ten times of hydrogenation into 20 grams of 9-ethylcarbazole, 3.7 wt.% of hydrogen storage capacity, which is a theoretical maximum of 5.8 wt.%, was achieved. The phase of 9-ethylcarbazole, which stored hydrogen, was liquid.
