System Engineering Structural Evaluation of APR1400 SG Steam Nozzle based on ASME BPVC Section III

Nozzles introduce regions of structural discontinuity in pressure vessels hence main points of concern when evaluating the structural integrity of a pressure vessel. In this study, a system approach to the evaluation of the APR1400 SG steam outlet nozzles was employed. The process was systematically broken down in and a V-model of the same created to be able to address all the stakeholders’ requirements in the design process. The model was developed in ANSYS workbench 18.1 from the design drawings, the parameters for design and level A (operating) conditions derived from the sta ndard safety analysis report (SSAR) for the APR1400 and the simulation done. The results of the simulations were then evaluated against the ASME BPVC section III, division 1, subsection NC to determine the steam outlet nozzles conformance. The nozzles conformed to the requirements of the code for both the design and the level A conditions which confirmed a successful design as per the stakeholders’ requirements.
